THERE ARE SO MANY CONCENTRATES. WHAT MAKES THEM DIFFERENT?
How many extracts are there? What's the difference between them? Read on to discover!
PRICE DIFFERENCES
Let's start by describing why prices are different for customers! There are many factors that may come into play but the most common reasons are quality and wholesale price points.
Quality can include the process it went through to reach its extraction form. How much the creator sold it to the dispensary also comes into play for the consumer. Brands creating the same product can sometimes sell to dispensaries for different prices based on their popularity and competition around them. Let's dissect these reasons further...
DIFFERENT FORMS OF EXTRACTIONS
Rosin is frequently seen as a better concentrate than resin. They share a name, but the way they are made differs a lot. Resin is made by hydrocarbon extraction, while rosin is made without solvents, using over 1000 pounds of pressure. This extract is made by squishing a cannabis nug with a machine that puts so much pressure on it that it causes the sticky substance to be removed. It can be smoked immediately, but it needs to be heated up first.
Live rosin is made from live plant matter, rather than dried cannabis. Once the plant is harvested, it is put in an ice bath inside a series of micron bags. The bags filter and isolate the THC trichomes, refining the material. Once the procedure is finished, the material is dried until it becomes bubble hash. This can then be compressed with heat and pressure to make live rosin.
Live resin is a highly sought-after resin made from frozen, live plant matter extracted using hydrocarbon extraction. This technique preserves the potency of the THC-rich trichomes better than drying and curing before harvesting. The process of creating live resin is lengthy and complex. The hydrocarbon solvent is forced through the plant material, leaving behind a concentrate with a more powerful flavor from its live compounds (terpenes, cannabinoids, flavonoids). The solvent is then purged.
Budder/Badder, otherwise known as badder wax, is a gooier cannabis extract compared to other waxes. It is created with higher heat and whipped to give it its unique texture. While containing a few cannabinoids, it is full of terpenes.
Crumble is a firmer version of budder. Budder is heated and whisked, while crumble is heated at a lower temp to evaporate the solvent and preserve the taste.
THC crystalline is the best kind of cannabis you can get from a pot store. They're made by taking out THC or CBD and separating it from other cannabinoids, so you get uncorrupted, pure THC crystals that don't have any color, smell, or taste.
Sugar wax is produced by taking out butane, akin to shatter. It appears glossy and slightly gummy, with a fragile consistency.
Water-retentive cannabis strains are best for sugar wax production. Sugar wax is made from a mix of different cannabinoids and terpenes, and can range from light yellow to slightly amber in color.
Shatter is a prevalent cannabis concentrate, usually with 80% THC, sold in many dispensaries. It appears like glass or candy but has no flavor. It may be tricky to use, but there are various ways to enjoy the end product.
RSO is a cannabis oil obtained from the entire plant, not just the trichomes. It contains all the cannabinoids, terpenes, and other compounds.
Creating it is intricate and time-consuming, similar to brewing a tincture. It's usually very dark, and unfortunately, it doesn't taste good because of the huge amount of plant material (the whole plant is utilized).
