Frequently Asked Questions — The Refinery Dispensary
Michigan dispensary locations in Kalamazoo, Detroit, and New Buffalo
Visiting for the First Time
What do I need to bring to shop at The Refinery?
A valid, government-issued photo ID showing you’re 21 or older. A driver’s license, state ID, or passport all work. No medical card required — all three locations are recreational.
Do I need to be a Michigan resident?
No. Out-of-state visitors are welcome at all locations. Your out-of-state driver’s license is accepted. Just note that any cannabis you purchase must stay in Michigan — it cannot legally cross state lines.
What happens when I arrive?
You’ll check in at the front, show your ID, and a budtender will help you from there. If you have an online order ready, pickup is quick. If you’re browsing, take your time — the staff is there to help, not to rush you.
I've never been to a dispensary before. Is it complicated?
Not at all. Let the budtender know it’s your first time and what you’re looking for — sleep, relaxation, something for focus, or just curious where to start. They’ll walk you through the options in plain terms and help you find something that fits.
Products & Inventory
What products does The Refinery carry?
Flower, pre-rolls, vape carts, disposables, edibles, gummies, concentrates, tinctures, topicals, and accessories. Selection varies by location and updates daily. Check the online menu for your store before you come in.
What brands do you carry?
The Refinery carries a range of Michigan-grown and Michigan-made brands. Hytek and Growing Pains are stocked across all locations and are among the most requested. You’ll also find Mitten Extracts, Glorious, Wyld, and others depending on the location.
Are your products lab tested?
Yes. Every product sold at The Refinery has been tested by a state-licensed Michigan lab for potency, purity, pesticides, and safety. Michigan’s testing requirements are among the most thorough in the country — results are available through the state database, and our staff can help you access them.
How do I know what's actually in stock?
Each location has a live online menu that reflects current inventory. Because popular products move fast, checking the menu before you visit — or placing an online order — is the best way to make sure you get what you want.
What's the difference between indica, sativa, and hybrid?
These are broad categories used to describe general effects. Indica strains are typically associated with relaxation and body effects. Sativa strains tend to be more uplifting and cerebral. Hybrids fall somewhere in between. That said, terpenes and cannabinoid profiles matter just as much as the category — your budtender can dig into the specifics of whatever’s on the shelf.
Ordering & Pickup
Can I order online for pickup?
Yes. All three locations offer online ordering through the store menu. Place your order, get a confirmation when it’s ready, and head straight to pickup. It usually takes just a few minutes.
How long does it take for an online order to be ready?
Most orders are ready within minutes. During busy periods it may take a bit longer, but you’ll get a confirmation as soon as it’s set.
Do you offer delivery?
Delivery availability varies. Check your location’s menu or contact the store directly for current options.
Payment & Pricing
Can I use a credit card?
No. Federal banking regulations prevent dispensaries from accepting credit cards. The Refinery accepts cash and debit cards (with a small processing fee). Every location has an ATM on-site.
Why does cannabis cost different amounts at different dispensaries?
Pricing depends on the brand, the grower, the product type, and local market conditions. The Refinery focuses on stocking quality Michigan brands at honest prices. Daily deals and specials are listed on each store’s menu.
Do you have a rewards program?
Yes. Earn 1 loyalty point for every $100 spent. Each point is worth 2% cashback on a future purchase. Create an account on the online store to track your points, or ask your budtender at checkout.
Michigan Cannabis Laws
Do I need a medical card to buy cannabis in Michigan?
No. Michigan legalized recreational cannabis for adults 21 and older. You do not need a medical card to shop at The Refinery. A valid photo ID showing your age is all that’s required.
How much cannabis can I legally buy at one time in Michigan?
Adults 21 and older can purchase up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis (or equivalent) per transaction at a recreational dispensary.
Can I take cannabis across state lines?
No. Cannabis purchased in Michigan must stay in Michigan. Transporting it across state lines — even into another state where cannabis is legal — is a federal offense.
Where can I legally consume cannabis in Michigan?
Consumption is allowed on private property with the property owner’s permission. Public consumption and use inside vehicles are prohibited under Michigan law. Some licensed consumption lounges exist in the state, but The Refinery locations are retail only.
Can I travel to The Refinery from Indiana or Ohio?
Yes — you can visit and purchase legally as a non-resident. Just be aware that you cannot take any product back with you across the state line.
Returns & Issues
Can I return cannabis products?
Michigan law does not allow cannabis returns once a product has left the store. If something arrives damaged or appears defective, contact the location where you purchased it and we’ll do what we can within legal limits.
